In short
Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government-backed contributory pension scheme that guarantees a monthly pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 from age 60 to subscribers who join between 18 and 40.
Also called: APY, Atal Pension Yojana scheme, APY pension, Jan Suraksha pension
What is the Atal Pension Yojana?
The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a voluntary, contributory pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector, launched on 9 May 2015 and operational from 1 June 2015. A subscriber picks a pension slab, pays a fixed monthly, quarterly or half-yearly contribution by auto-debit from a bank or post office account, and from age 60 receives a guaranteed lifelong monthly pension. If market returns on the accumulated corpus fall short, the Government of India meets the gap; if they exceed expectations, the surplus is credited to the subscriber.
APY is a pension product regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) rather than IRDAI, and runs on the National Pension System architecture. It belongs in an insurance encyclopedia because it is sold through the same bank channels, as one of the three Jan Suraksha schemes with PMJJBY and PMSBY.

After the subscriber's death. The spouse receives the same pension for life. After both die, the nominee receives the corpus accumulated up to age 60. If the subscriber dies before 60, the spouse can continue contributions in the subscriber's account or exit and take the accumulated amount.
Exit before 60. Allowed on death or terminal illness. A voluntary exit returns only the subscriber's own contributions with net earnings; any government co-contribution received in the early years is forfeited.
Co-contribution. Subscribers who joined between 1 June 2015 and 31 March 2016, and who were not income tax payers or members of a statutory social security scheme, received a government co-contribution of 50 per cent of their contribution, up to ₹1,000 a year, for five years. New subscribers do not get it.
Key numbers and recent decisions
On 21 January 2026 the Union Cabinet approved continuation of APY up to 2030-31, with funding for promotional and development activities and gap funding to meet the guaranteed pension commitments. According to the Press Information Bureau, APY had 8.96 crore enrolments and assets of about ₹51,400 crore as on 31 March 2026. Women made up about 48 per cent of subscribers in April 2025, and most subscribers choose the lowest ₹1,000 slab.
What the Atal Pension Yojana means for distribution
- It is a bank and post office product. Banks enrol subscribers at branches, through business correspondents, net banking and mobile apps. PFRDA runs targets, outreach programmes and recognition for banks, which makes APY a regular item on branch scorecards.
- Persistency is the real challenge. APY needs at least 20 years of unbroken contributions. Accounts fall into default when the balance is short on the debit date. Banks that use reminders, flexible quarterly or half-yearly modes and re-activation drives keep more accounts alive.
- Slab choice deserves a conversation. Most subscribers take ₹1,000 a month, which will be worth far less in 20 to 40 years. A good adviser shows the cost of a higher slab at the subscriber's age and lets them decide.
- The income tax rule needs checking. Since October 2022, anyone who is or has been an income tax payer cannot join, and accounts opened in breach are closed with the corpus returned. Enrolling staff should ask the question and record the answer.
- It pairs naturally with insurance. A customer joining APY is a good fit for PMJJBY and PMSBY in the same visit, and later for individual protection and pension plans from insurers as income grows.
